Thought you might like to know that I have been awarded a First Class Honours degree in Classical Civilisation and am now doing a PHd

I've decided that a year and a term of Modern Languages at Durham University is quite enough, thank you very much! I'm going back to Durham in September, but to start again - with Classics this time! I found myself skipping French classes to attend some of the Classics lectures and I have made some really good friends amongst the Classics department, so it makes sense to change now. In the meantime I'm working and earning some good money in Gisburn.

Hello from Newcastle University- 11.11.99
Just a short message to let you know how I'm getting on. At the moment everything is going really well, the course is really interesting and university is really good. I've just finished my main modules for this semester, which were Greek Literature and Archaic and Classical Greece. I should be starting the Roman Republic and Roman Art and Architecture tomorrow. I've also joined the classics society here called the Hippokleides Society. They haven't done much yet but soon I think they'll be starting to organise events. It still seems a bit strange being here and it is quite hard to believe that it been two months and that I've only six weeks before we break up for Christmas.
Anyway, I've got to get back and finish some work on Thucydides.

Thank you so much for the reference for the British School in Athens. I am hopeful of getting a study place there for next Summer.
I have recently come back from Rhodes and I am sending you some of my best photos of the classical sites. I didn't realise there was so much to see! I was quite amazed at the lack of security. It was quite easy to go and walk over the ruins and touch the temples.
I found I could actually fathom out some of the inscriptions on the stone. The museum in Rhodes town was brilliant, I took a marvellous photo of the head of Hermes, close-up.
Back at University, everything is going fine. I've recently been elected President of the Classics Society. I have a good circle of committed friends who are going to help get things moving.
Next week we are going to see the Agamemnon at Birkenhead and in the Spring I will be visiting the London Festival of Greek Drama. I may be going down for one of the workshops.
By the way, Samantha (Smith) passed all her modules and seems really happy.

I leave for Athens on the 31st August and return on the 21st September.
